Matka Canyon gets most of the attention, and deservedly so — but Skopje sits within reach of several other worthwhile day trips, useful if you have more than a couple of days in the capital or want to avoid the busiest weekend crowds at Matka.

An ancient astronomical site in the hills near Kumanovo, roughly 90 minutes from Skopje — recognized by NASA as one of the world's oldest astronomical observatories. A quieter, off-the-radar alternative to the main sights.
Vodno Mountain & the Millennium Cross
Skopje's own backyard mountain, reachable by cable car, with hiking trails and sweeping views over the entire city — doesn't require leaving the city limits at all.
Kratovo
A small town built inside an extinct volcanic crater, with distinctive stone bridges and towers — about 90 minutes from Skopje and rarely crowded.
Tetovo & the Painted Mosque
An hour from Skopje, Tetovo's Šarena Džamija (Painted Mosque) is one of the most visually striking religious buildings in the country, alongside good mountain views toward the Šar range.
